How do construction workers learn to bid and estimate on jobs?
cbr600girl asked:
I have friends in construction trades and always wondered how they learned to bid? How do they know how to bid? How do they know what's fair? With all the changes in economy and material prices how can they keep up? Basically how do they come to their final estimates? Are there any books or programs out there that contractors use?
Thanks!

All the trades – plumbing, electrical, framing etc. have bidding programs available to them. For a fee a company will send price updates for the construction industry. These places also offer school to teach you to use their bidding program. The local collage or university would also have degrees in construction management and bidding. Larger companies hire these degreed professionals to do that one job — bid!
Just type construction bidding software in your search. With experience a person could figure this on their own for a small job. They know how long it should take to build a certain size building or house – adjust for material price increases and hope for the best.

I believe their is a disc program that is real good at estimating the cost once you input what it asks for.You can also buy books a Borders books that tell you how to estimate the job.

I submit plans to all of my core subcontractors for pricing of concrete, carpentry, plumbing, electric etc….I do takeoffs myself to price most of the materials for rough and finishes. We do use estimating software for much of the estimating, and prices are adjusted to accommodate current material and labor costs.
Many of us have learned through experience, however there are classes and books available.
